Announcing the formal establishment of the

Initiative committee for
the Solidarity Campaign Against Forced Displacements in India in UK

Following a meeting organised by Indian Workers Association (IWA) to support the victims of Nandigram, in Birmingham, in UKSaturday 15th December 200, in response to the appeals for support for the victims of forced displacement from India based peoples organisations, an initiative committee was formally established in the UK. The proposal that was put forward by the representative of the IWA, received prompt support from various UK based organisations including WPRM, International Migrants solidarity Centre, affiliate orgs of International League of Peoples' Struggle in Britain and other groups and individuals. on

The initiative received immediate support from ILSP general secretary present at the gathering through a statement that was issued on the same day launching a call on all democratic and anti-imperialist organisations including its own members to support and launch similar initiatives in support of the millions of people of India that will be affected by the devastating policies advanced by the Indian ruling classes opening the country to further dependency and imperialist plunder under the guise of development through Special Economic Zones (SEZ).

The well attended gathering in Birmingham that was part of a series of meeting arranged to address the issue of forced displacement was addressed by GN Saibaba on a short stop over trip abroad. GN Saibaba, representing the "Anti-displacement and peoples development movement" that was formally established in India in March 2007 through a conference in Ranchi, spoke of the devastating dimensions of the forced displacement and vividly described the resistance of the people against the Indian government's policies that claims under the present "second generation reforms" India will become a super power by 2020.

GN Saibaba, addressing the issues of displacement presented a well prepared background to the peoples resistance to the present surge of land acquisitions for large scale projects said: " the present 'second generation reforms' that the Indian government claims will turn India to a superpower in 2020 are nothing but continuation of the imperialist plunder of the country in order to maximise their wind fall profits at the cost of millions of the oppressed including the tribal peoples and toiling masses of the country." He further said: "This claim of the Indian ruling classes who role is to serve the imperialist powers has nothing to do with the people's aspiration for development and is merely a cover for the barefaced looting of the country's vast resources and its population. The true anti-people nature this policy has already been demonstrated on the ground in places such as Nandigram where despite savage brutality of the CPIM government in West Bengal the resistance continues even today a month after the so-called 'recapture of Nadigram' by its goons and thugs."

GN Saibaba, further highlighted 6 different forms of displacement that arise as a direct result of the government's "second generation reforms" affecting millions of people not only living in tribal and agricultural land but also in the urban slums and shanty towns through "Urban beautification and renewal projects" that aims to remove the urban poor and to stop the flow of the displaced villagers to the city.

He recounted over 500 SEZs that have already been designated for development and that this has already roused millions of people against the reckless plans of the regime in India.

The representatives of the organisations attending the meeting expressed their support for the struggle of the peoples of India to rid themselves of the yoke of imperialism and reaction and stated their commitment to join the solidarity campaign and help its advance and success.

The Initiative committee will be meeting soon to consider the tasks a head and plan its activities and requests all those interested in joining the campaign to establish contact with the address below.

The initiative committee in the UK is part of an international initiative to launch supportive campaign against forced displacement and in support of the peoples struggle in India.
