As others stood up for the people of the Philippines during last year's typhoons, it is now our moment to stand up for the people of Haiti in their crucial time of need following the recent earthquake that has left tens of thousands dead and seriously injured. Please find suggestions below on how you can help. MALCOLM GUY Earthquake aid to HaitiOver the coming hours and days the Canada Haiti Action Network or CHAN will be posting information on how to help Haiti and Haitians recover from the devastating earthquake of January 12th. Check back often to see how to help and to attend events in your area. What is CHAN: The CHAN is a coalition of local grassroots groups (active groups include Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax) committed to exposing and bringing an end to Canada's active imperialist role in Haiti. To learn more about CHAN, visit CanadaHaitiAction.ca. The Haitian Red Cross You can contribute to the Haitian Red Cross through its international partners in the International Red Cross. Contributions are tax deductible. The Canadian Red Cross is at: http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=33900&tid=001. We also encourage contributions to the following organizations: Zanmi Lasante/ Partners in Health The Zanmi Lasante medical center is located in the Central Plateau of Haiti and delivers health care through a network of clinics in that region of the country. It also trains Haitians as doctors and health professionals. The health center survived the earthquake and is moving to deliver aid to the disaster zone. Update: PIH is now running Haiti's public hospital in Port-au-Prince. PIH has also released a statement calling for organizations to offer aid that respects human rights in Haiti. The statement was released in conjunction with groups such as Mario Joseph and Brian Concannon's Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti (see here). To donate, go to: http://www.pih.org/home.html Donations in the U.S. are tax deductible. By mail, send cheque with "Haiti Earthquake Relief" in the memo line to: Partners In Health Doctors Without Borders/ Medecins sans frontières Doctors Without Borders operates clinics in Port au Prince and surrounding neighbourhoods. It has expertise in disaster relief. Donations in Canada and the U.S. are tax deductible. Go to: http://www.msf.ca/news-media/news/2010/01/haiti-update/ Sawatzky Family Foundation-SOPUDEP School SOPUDEP is a pioneering school in Petionville with an enrolment of 600 students from elementary to senior high school grades. The school has survived the earthquake and we understand there were no casualties inside. Staff are transforming it into a disaster medical center and will urgently need funds. The Sawatzky Family Foundation is a registered charity in Canada and issues tax deductible receipts. Go to: http://www.sopudep.org/donate. By mail: The Sawatzky Family Foundation Haiti Emergency Relief Fund In association with the Haiti Action Committee in San Francisco/Bay Area, this fund delivers resources directly to grassroots organizations in Haiti. It was founded 04 following the 2004 coup d’etat that forced the elected president of Haiti, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, from office and imposed a two-year regime of human rights violations whose consequence continues today. http://www.haitiaction.net/About/HERF/HERF.html By mail: Haiti Emergency Relief Fund/EBSC
