The International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) condemns the arrest of Raja Sarkhel, All Indian Executive Committee Member of Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF) and Secretary of the West Bengal State Unit and Prasun Chatterjjee, Executive Member of State Unit (Gana Pratirodh Manch) last 5th October 2009. The police fabricated false charges of linking Sarkhel and Chatterjjee to the Communist Party of India (Maoist) under Unlawful Activities (Amendment) Act 2008.
Raja Sarkhel is a well-known and committed activist for the past three decades and continues to espouse the interest of the people, working for various mass movements in West Bengal, including Singur, Nandigram and Lalgarh. He was abducted by the reactionary forces while on his way home. Prasun Chatterjjee has been actively working for the people’s cause for more than a decade. He was whisked away by the police from his residence where he was taking rest after his eyes were treated in a hospital. The arrest of these two well-known activists of the RDF is part of the orchestrated vicious campaign against progressive and democratic forces in Kolkata by the reactionary and mercenary forces under the CPI (M) and the BJP. Those arrested are heavily tortured to force them to give false testimonies against their fellow progressive and democratic forces. The ILPS calls upon its member organizations to protest the illegal arrest of Raja Sarkhel and Prasun Chatterjjee, demand their immediate and unconditional release and the withdrawal of the false charges against them.
