"Junk the Visiting Forces Agreement" will be the resounding call of GABRIELA on the days leading to March 8 International Women's Day. "There is a growing public clamor for the scrapping of the VFA as the Philippine and US governments adamantly refuse to heed the decision of the Supreme Court to transfer detention of Lance Corporal Daniel Smith within Philippine territory. There is no better time to unify and heighten the call to junk the VFA and to stop the rape of our nation than on March 8 Women's Day," said Emmi de Jesus, GABRIELA secretary general during a press conference this morning. |

By Marie Boti The 8th March Committee of Women of Diverse Origins demands nothing more and nothing less. We are feminists of diverse origins. Immersed in the grassroots, in our communities and in the wider society we oppose patriarchy and misogyny in terms of family relations, societal and political institutions, culture and the media. We are committed to dignity and to basic rights - freedom from fear and intimidation, freedom from sexual discrimination, freedom from fundamentalism. Without basic rights, women and their families are unable to achieve human dignity. |

By Renato Reyes, Jr. Jose Maria Sison, former youth leader and founder of Kabataang Makabayan celebrated his 70th birthday last February 8. As an activist and revolutionary for 50 years, his ideas remain very relevant for the youth of today. On February 19, Joma will be launching two books, forming a part of his selected writings from 1991-2008. I have no doubt it would be a sure hit among activists. |

By Mel Frykberg http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=45798 RAMALLAH, Feb 17 (IPS) - Israel is bracing for a wave of lawsuits accusing the Jewish state of substantial human rights violations during its 22-day military assault on Gaza which left more than 1,300 Palestinians dead and nearly 5,000 wounded, more than half of them civilian. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Amnesty International (AI) and Human Rights Watch (HRW) have confirmed that phosphorous bombs were used over Gaza. It is against international law to use phosphorous in densely crowded civilian areas. |
